Dorsal Approach For 360 Degree Spinal Fusion Surgery
Abstract
Objectives: Surgical approaches for decompression and fusion of the thoracic and lumbar spine have evolved. Currently, the dorsal-only approach for 360-degree fusion procedures has gained popularity. This presentation aims to discuss our approach to the procedure, including benefits, limitations and complications. Methods: A review of ten recent cases of dorsal approach for 360-degree fusions of the thoracic and lumbar spines. Results: The pre and post-operative clinical and radiological features are presented. Conclusions: Compared to the previous methods of separate anterior and posterior approaches for 360-degree fusions of the spine, the dorsal-only approach has benefits including shorter operative times, blood loss and a single portal of entry. Downsides include a steep learning curve, increased incidence of accidental durotomy and possible traction injury of lumbar nerve roots.
