Nousnav: An Open-Source Low-Cost Neuronavigation System

Abstract

Objective: NousNav is a complete low-cost open source neuro-navigation system that aims to democratize access to sophisticated medical technology purpose built for use in lower-resource settings. The objective of NousNav is to provide a model for neurosurgeons around the world to be able to reproduce, build and operate a fully functional neuro-navigation system at an affordable cost. Methods: NousNav is entirely open source and relies on low-cost off-the-shelf components, which makes it easy to reproduce and deploy in any region. The key components are a motion capture 3D camera and a high end laptop running custom software. built on 3DSlicer. NousNav’s software is also open source and specifically devised with lower-resource settings in mind. Results: The system offers an intuitive user interface which guides the clinician through pre-operative and intraoperative steps needed to plan and carry out a surgical plan. The designed interface is also clean and simple. This allows for easy intraoperative use by either the practicing clinician or personnel in the operating room alleviating the need for a dedicated technician for operation. Conclusion: We have built and distributed several prototypes to demonstrate feasibility of the objectives and to gather feedback from clinicians practicing in diverse settings.
