Abstract

Objective: To carry out a current review of occipital encephaloceles management in Kenya. Data source: a review of all the published literature on occipital encephaloceles until October 2021 was carried out through the internet, google, PubMed, and Medline searches. Methodology: Published data on Occipital Encephaloceles were included in the review. Abstracts of relevant articles identified were assessed, read, and analyzed to determine their relevance to occipital encephaloceles, the subject under review, paying close attention to Kenya. Conclusion: Occipital encephaloceles are generally rare conditions but are still widely prevalent in Kenya. Despite food fortification and legislation being passed, Monitoring and evaluation suggest that individual micronutrients are not tracked and not all manufacturers abide as required. The increase in health workforce and capacity development is allowing early intervention, better surgical management, and improved outcomes. Public awareness and education of Kenyans, especially preconception women will go a long way to addressing this preventable disease.
